Pierceton Seeks Funds To Tear Down Perry Building

PIERCETON - The Pierceton Town Council conducted a public hearing Monday on applying for a grant to remove the collapsed Perry building.

The Indiana Department of Commerce grant, if approved, would help pay for the removal of the old building material and underground petroleum storage tanks and contaminated soil on the site, according to clerk-treasurer Janet Castle. The town is seeking $500,000 in grant funds and would match that amount with $100,000.

The council also approved a consulting contract with Robert Murphy, of Murphy and Associates, to administer the grant if it is approved.

Castle said the town is considering building a multipurpose community building on the site to serve as a senior center, with additional storage space for town equipment and vehicles.

In other business, the council directed the Pierceton Fire Department and EMS to get quotes on having the administration and station building rekeyed.

Dana Cone reported to the council that the initial street work has been completed on Phase I of the Ryerson Green housing development. The council also agreed to accept the street into the town's jurisdiction once the top coat is completed.

Council president Jerry Kreger thanked town employees Brad Bailey and Chip Hall and the Pierceton Chamber of Commerce for their work during the recent Pierceton Days festival.
