PIERCETON – On April 25, Pierceton Elementary School held its annual Science and Learning Fair. This year the Science and Learning Fair had over 100 projects. Students presented their projects to the judges and answered follow-up questions to support their experiments. First-place winner was Zack Stump, a fifth-grade student. Stump is passionate about the Earth’s natural environment, and wanted to find out how fast recycled paper decomposed compared to paper made from all new materials. He took into account variables such as humidity, Ph and temperature. Second-place winner was Austin Allen, a fourth-grade student. He wanted to find out how liquids such as coffee and soda affect teeth compared to egg shells. He used three of his own teeth to run the experiment. Austin was surprised to find out that a tooth soaked in coffee for a week broke while he brushed it. Third-place winner was Nathan Linton, a fifth-grade student. Nathan was curious about how objects moved through a liquid. He decided to run an experiment that studied how the viscosity of a fluid changed in relation to time and temperature. Students from first grade through fifth grade entered a variety of projects into the demonstration and display portion of Learning Fair.
