PIERCETON - Deputy marshal Tim Sammons advised the town council Monday that two grants were recently awarded to the police department. Town marshal George Alexander is on vacation.
The first, a $4,000 grant, will allow for installation of in-car video cameras, and another grant, of $3,000, for the DARE program. Sammons said the programs are funded 100 percent with no matching funds required by the town.
The board noted the department is down to three reserve officers and asked Sammons to prepare an advertisement for more.
The officer said candidates who applied for the recently filled third regular officer's position may be interested in serving the town in a reserve capacity and he would contact a couple of men.
Pam Kennedy of Housing Opportunities of Warsaw approached the board with two homeowners eligible for the owner-occupied rehabilitation funding.
One family will have $18,000 worth of work done, including installation of a new furnace. The other family will have new windows installed and a plumbing upgrade for $10,000.
Kennedy said recent changes in Indiana Housing Finance Authority allow a loan of less than $15,000 to be forgiven in five years.
She said there are two other applications undergoing the approval process and there is room for more applicants.
The board also increased rental fees in the community room to $75 plus a $25 deposit. Also increased was the price for a load of limestone, when available, to $15.
Emergency labor remains the same at $25 per hour as well as emergency backhoe services at $40 per hour.
Town council members are Jerry Kreger and Terry Hill. Ron Hall was absent.
