Pierceton Philanthropists

Two fifth-grade Pierceton Elementary students have shown that they care about others. Through an initiative conceived on their own, Olivia Stouder and Shelby Miller led a schoolwide campaign to collect funds and food for the homeless shelter in Warsaw. The two girls set up a contest between the grade levels to collect coins in large coin jars. Whichever grade level collected the most money would be awarded with an ice cream party. The party will be funded by the girls’ families. Students were also encouraged to bring in canned food items for the shelter. The girls took the initiative to contact the homeless shelter in Warsaw and make sure the project was acceptable to them. They then met with their principal, Barb Ihnen, to talk about their project.  They presented her with a flyer they wanted to pass out to the other students in the school. Ihnen helped them with the logistical aspects of their project. The girls made announcements on the PA to promote the collections. When the project concluded, $319.40 was collected to give to the homeless shelter along with a myriad of canned goods. Second grade won the award for bringing in the most money. Pictured (L to R) are Stouder and Miller.
