ELKHART COUNTY - A Pierceton man was injured after crashing his motorcycle while allegedly attempting to flee police in Elkhart County.
According to an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office crash news releasee, at about 9:24 p.m. Thursday, Wakarusa Police Department attempted to initiate a traffic stop on two motorcycles in the area of Ind. 19 and Nelsons Parkway. Both motorcycles fled and a pursuit was initiated by the Wakarusa Police Department and later assisted by the Nappanee Police Department.
During the pursuit, a 2009 Yamaha FZ6, driven by Dominic Blair, 21, Pierceton, turned westbound on Market Street in Nappanee and accelerated to a high rate of speed. A 2015 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by Kelli Gillis, 26, Nappanee, was turning left onto Market Street from Morningside Drive and did not see the motorcycle. Gillis pulled onto Market Street and the motorcycle hit the Equinox in the front passenger side. The motorcycle then continued several hundred feet down the road before Blair lost control of the motorcycle.
Blair was ejected from the motorcycle and landed on Market Street. The motorcycle flipped through the air several times and came to a stop up next to the residence of 759 Market St.
The release states that Blair was transported to the hospital by helicopter for a cut to the face, a cut to the head and a possible broken wrist.
Gillis did not suffer any injuries.
The Yamaha sustained damage all over. The Equinox had damage to the front passenger side.
The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash while the pursuit is being investigated by the Nappanee and Wakarusa police departments.
This investigation is still ongoing.
