Posted

SIDNEY - A Pierceton man died Wednesday evening when his car drifted off the road and continued to drive in the ditch before finally hitting a tree.

David Wayne McCool, 38, of Pierceton, suffered massive head, facial and internal injuries in the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Kosciusko County Coroner Larry Ladd.

The 5:16 p.m. accident occurred south of Sidney on Ind. 13.

Officials report that after leaving the road, McCool's car traveled 416 feet in the ditch area before striking the tree. After striking the tree the car rolled over, coming to rest on its top.

Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department investigators report that a tire print indicated McCool did not brake prior to the collision. A witness at the scene also reported to police that he didn't see any brake lights before the impact.

Preliminary investigation into the accident reports that it is unknown if alcohol was a factor. McCool was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of impact.

Assisting at the scene were Sidney Fire Department, Chester Township Fire Department, Life Med EMS of North Manchester, Kosciusko County Deputy Coroner John E. Sadler and the Pierceton Police Department.

The accident remains under investigation at this time.
