PIERCETON - Celebrate fine arts and writing July 19 during the fourth annual Pierceton Fine Arts and Writing Fair. The purpose of the fair, according to chairwoman Lila O'Connell, is "to bring people into Pierceton, and promote the fine arts and writing creativity."
Half of the proceeds also will go to the Pierceton Chamber of Commerce, with the other half benefitting Lakeland Art Association Inc., a 501(c)3. Money is generated through sponsors and artist booths. A 10-foot by 10-foot booth is $25 outside on the Brower Park grounds, or $50 inside the RR Depot.
"It's going to be good quality stuff," said O'Connell of the art.
The fair opens at 10 a.m. July 19. Country-western guitarist Shade Jonze will provide the first hour of entertainment. He performs songs from such artists as Johnny Cash and Conway Twitty.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Michele Payton's Christian band Lazarus Rising will perform. At 1 p.m. is the VIP Celebration. The 50th anniversary of the Lakeland Art Association Inc. will be recognized. Also at that time, awards for winners of the arts and writing fair will be presented.
Philip Balke, a local keyboardist, performs at 1:30 p.m. Writing recitations in the Depot take place at 2:30 p.m., with Shade Jonze returning to the stage at 3 p.m. The fair closes at 4 p.m.
The local Lions Club will provide food and drink in the park.
Anyone wanting to submit three or fewer writings can send them to O'Connell at 106 W. Wayne St., Pierceton, IN 46562. There are adult and children divisions for short stories or poetry.
Any original fine art may be submitted for the fine arts contest. For more information about the professional or non-professional art contest, contact O'Connell at 574-594-2723. The art contest is open to adults only.
"We've got, so far, mostly professional, so it's good bodies of work," said O'Connell.
A Larwill Cub Scout troop, lead by Cub Scoutmaster Tracey Sills, will relieve artists from their booths as needed, O'Connell said.
Judges for the writing contest will be Pierceton Library librarians Pam Myers and Nancy Stoddard. Fine arts judges will be Madison Elementary School art teacher Karen Klimpert and Manchester College professor James Adams.
There also will be purchase awards for the fine arts.
