Pierceton Approves Housing Contracts

PIERCETON - Warsaw Housing Opportunities representative Pam Kennedy presented six owner-occupied home repair projects for the town council's consideration Monday.

All the projects were approved. Kennedy said each project was priced at around $10,000 and more applications are coming in.

"The state wants a waiting list and preapproval of applications so the minute a grant is approved, the money can be spent," she said about the Indiana Housing Finance Authority program, funded through HUD.

Bob Murphy, of R.P. Murphy and Associates, approached the council about the possibility of a "bridge park," using the collection of Jack Camden.

Camden, Murphy said, has 18 antique, one- and two-of-a-kind bridges, several dating back to the late 19th century. Calling the bridge park an intriguing possibility, Murphy said there is grant money available for such a project. Camden's property is not within town limits. Maintenance would become the town's responsibility if such a project were approved.

Town marshal George Alexander reported that the town has six reserve officers now with the addition of April England and Matt Owens, who are now through the police academy. The third full-time officer, Terry Cahill, is still attending the police school.

Once Cahill graduates, the town will have 24-hour police coverage, seven days a week.

Alexander said he expects troubles with local kids to pick up once school is out.

"We don't want juveniles in the business district after 9 p.m.," the marshal said, adding kids on roller blades and skateboards are being shooed off public property regularly.

"We're confiscating skateboards for 30 days, too," he said.

In other business, the council:

• Heard that work on Ind. 13 should be finished July 31, the day prior to Pierceton Days.

• Gave official support to the American Legion Auxiliary's annual Poppy Days fund-raiser.

• Approved Phend and Brown for five repaving projects in town this summer for a total cost of $21,566. Work will be on Fourth, Elm, Catholic and Washington streets and alleys around the post office.

• Approved a second year of tax abatement for TTP Inc.
