Piecuch Receives Good Housekeeping AwardKara Piecuch of Warsaw received this year’s North Central Indiana Housing Good Housekeeping Award grand prize.
Every year, Tom Bulger, NCIH inspector, reviews each unit receiving housing assistance under a contract with the city of Warsaw. During the visit, if the house is clean and the tenant has reported repairs as needed through the year to the landlord, Bulger presents a Good Housekeeping Award.
This year, Bulger conducted 168 annual inspections and 61% of the tenants received the award. They also received a certificate, along with their name in the 2020 drawing for a grand prize award.
Piecuch, according to the news release, has received the Good Housekeeping Award several times, but hasn’t drawn the grand prize until this year. Piecuch was greeted at the door by Bulger, Warsaw Housing Authority Executive Director Pamela Kennedy and Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer with balloons, a dozen roses and a $100 gift card from Walmart.
Kennedy said the award has been going on since the 1980s or 1990s.
“Our program is the housing choice voucher program and if we don’t have landlords who will rent to people who have housing assistance, they would have nowhere to live, so this is an incentive for the landlord,” said Kennedy. She also said it helps in landlords deciding whether or not to rent to another person receiving housing assistance.
Thallemer said Kennedy and the Housing Authority staff works with its clients to educate them about better housekeeping practices and “this is just one of the nicer incentivized programs they’ve done for some time.”
