Three people were injured - one critically - when a pickup slammed into the rear of a car stopped for a red light on U.S. 30.
A rear-seat passenger in the car, Sylvia Reed, no age available, of Huntington, suffered head injuries and was semi-conscious at the scene of the 2:24 p.m. accident at the highway's intersection with CR 150W, west of Warsaw. She was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital for treatment before being transferred to Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, where she was listed in critical condition late this morning.
According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, Reed was a passenger in a car driven by James Wyland Freeman, 66, of Huntington, when the vehicle they were in was struck from behind by a pickup driven by Harry L. White, 54, Roanoke.
White told police he was eastbound on U.S. 30 approaching CR 150W and saw that the light was green for eastbound traffic. White said he looked away and, when he looked back again, the light was red and a vehicle was stopped in his lane of travel. He tried to stop, but his pickup slid on the wet pavement and hit Freeman's car in the rear.
Freeman told police that he saw White's pickup coming up from behind and that it didn't appear the vehicle was going to stop. He attempted to accelerate and move forward to avoid a collision, but was unable to get out of the way.
Freeman suffered facial fractures and another passenger in his car, Euna Freeman, no age available, of Huntington, suffered bruises to her neck. Both were treated at KCH and released. White was not injured.
