MENTONE - Council members voted Monday at Mentone to retain Lynn Phillips as their president.
The council reorganized after the recent swearing in of Ed Rock as its newest member. He replaced Terry Reed, who resigned Aug. 4.
Forrest Kantner rounds out the council as its third member.
Adoption of the 1998 budget met no opposition, and the council approved the salary ordinance with the following changes: Marshal Tim Carpenter and Deputy Marshal Jim Eads each received a $1,500 pay increase; town employees Brian Reed and Darrel Miller, $800; and clerk-treasurer Cheryl Phillips, $500.
In other business, the council approved a request from Carpenter to make the first parking space east of Tucker Street on the south side of Ind. 25 reserved for police vehicles only. The location is in front of the new police station in the former Lee Bazini law office building.
Council also gave the go-ahead for the carpet in the police station to be replaced.
In other matters, the council:
Signed a resolution to reapply for a planning grant for Bell Memorial Library. A previous request for funds was denied.
Approved change orders for the water project, with Leland Roberts Construction being paid an additional $4,353.55 for work to be done.
Announced that lead and copper samples will be conducted soon. Reed said the same residents who participated last year will again be asked.

Gave permission for Miller to purchase an air compressor at a cost of $399.
The next meeting is at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 in the town hall.
