Philip Duane KlineSOUTH BEND – Philip Duane Kline, 72, passed away at noon Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at home in South Bend. He was born Sept. 30, 1946, to Duane and Kathryn Firestone Kline.
He graduated from Syracuse High School in 1964. He served his country in Germany with the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968. Phil was a craftsman, having learned from his carpenter father and was a natural artist.
He received a degree in cosmetology in Indianapolis in 1964. He worked in various salons then had his own shop in South Bend for many years. His "claim to fame" was styling Dolly Parton's hair in Fort Wayne at the beginning of her career in the early 1970s. She was telling him how difficult it was to find a good hair stylist while on the road and asked him to be her personal hair dresser. He was unable to do that, but suggested she try using wigs.
He is survived by his sister, Judi Smith; niece, Barbara Koenig; nephew, Duane Vultaggio; and his long-time companion, Michael Faught.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation service was provided by Palmer Funeral Homes of South Bend. End-of-life palliative care was provided by Center for Hospice of South Bend. A special gathering for family and friends will be held at Syracuse Lake later this summer.
