A new scholarship and a charitable trust were announced Wednesday by 1st Source Bank.
The Pfleiderer Scholarship Trust and Pfleiderer Charitable Trust were established at 1st Source Bank, said John Elliott, vice president and trust officer.
The Esther and Robert Pfleiderer Scholarship Trust has assets of more than $2 million, and will make annual scholarship awards to graduates of Warsaw Community High School. Also, 10 percent of the annual awards will be granted to Manchester College students through the college.
The Esther Pfleiderer Charitable Trust has assets of $1.8 million and will help charitable organizations in Kosciusko County improve the quality of life in the county. According to the request by Esther Pfleiderer, the advisory committee will favor activities that reach citizens whose needs are not being met by government sources and activities that stimulate and encourage additional funding, help organizations serve the community more efficiently and more effectively and will provide seed money for community-wide projects and promote cooperation among charitable organizations.
Esther and Bob Pfleiderer were born and raised in Warsaw; Esther graduated from Manchester College, received her master's degree from Purdue University and taught math for Warsaw schools for 39 years. She also was active in the community and served such organizations as First Presbyterian Church, Warsaw Community Public Library, Salvation Army, Kosciusko County Community Foundation and Kosciusko County Historical Society. She was named Warsaw's Woman of the Year in 1982.
Bob Pfleiderer was a civil engineer with a degree from Purdue University, and served as county surveyor for many years. In his honor, a portion of the new Lake City Greenway Trail by Pike Lake will be named after him.
Applications for the scholarship are available at 1st Source Bank, Kosciusko County Community Foundation and WCHS. They are due by April 1 and the recipients will be announced at the WCHS scholarship awards night in May.
Applications for grants from the charitable trust are due Jan. 31 and will be announced Feb. 28 and awarded March 31.
