Pedestrian, Vehicle Collide Friday Evening

A bicyclist was injured after being hit by a vehicle Friday on South Indiana Street, 180 feet south of East Center Street, Warsaw.

According to the Warsaw Police Department accident report, at 5:17 p.m. Friday, Darren A. Diaz, 39, West Winona Avenue, Warsaw, was riding his bicycle down the alley eastbound toward Indiana Street. When he approached Indiana Street, he told police, he didn’t stop. Diaz said he rode out into the roadway and looked left at a 2013 Nissan Frontier driven by Brandice M. Wampler, 46, East Robby Drive, Warsaw.

Diaz said he was hit by Wampler’s vehicle and fell to the ground.

Wampler said she was driving on Indiana Street from West Center Street. She said as she was driving on?Indiana Street, Diaz pulled out in front of her from the alley and she didn’t have time to stop, which caused Diaz to strike the front of her vehicle.

Wampler said Diaz stood up after the accident and fell to the ground just before officers arrived.

Police observed damage to the front of Wampler’s vehicle. Police also observed a bent rear rim and scratches on Diaz’s bicycle.  

One witness said she was in her vehicle parked on Indiana Street. She said she saw Diaz riding east through the alley. The witness said Diaz looked to his left, saw Wampler’s vehicle and did not stop.

Diaz complained of pain to the left hip/leg area and was transported to Parkview Regional Hospital, Fort Wayne.

Damage was estimated at $1,000-$2,500.
