A Merrillville woman was struck Tuesday afternoon by a vehicle after getting out of that same vehicle.

David. R. Murdock, 69, of Chicago, was driving on U.S. 30, 400 feet east of Springhill Road, when the passenger in his vehicle, Melissa A. Muhammad, 48, Merrillville, decided to get out of the vehicle and started walking east on the shoulder of U.S. 30.

According to the police report, Murdock said he tried following Muhammad, to get her back into the vehicle, but she refused. Murdock then said he was trying to back up and drive next to Muhammad, but she changed direction and the passenger side rear corner of Murdock’s vehicle struck her.

Muhammed was taken to Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, for unspecified injuries.

The right rear tail light housing and rear bumper cover were damaged on Murdock’s car. The estimated damage is $1,000-$2,500. Warsaw Police Department investigated the accident.
