Parks Dept to Offer Canoeing This Summer

Warsaw Parks and Recreation Department will offer canoeing this summer for youth through adults for the first time.

Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety accepted grant funding from the Kosciusko County Community Foundation earlier this year to purchase six canoes.

“A lot of people had mentioned with our area lakes that we should have canoes and this provides a good opportunity for that,” said Staci Young, Warsaw Parks Department recreation director.

Registration has started and can be done by mailing a registration form that is available on the city’s website at www.warsaw.in.gov

Mail registration forms to Warsaw Parks Office, 117 E. Canal St., Warsaw IN 46580 or visit the park office to register for the little paddlers and teen canoeing classes.

Community canoeing sessions are free and do not require registration.

A Little Paddlers Clinic Session 1 is June 11 from 9-11 a.m.

Session 2 is June 11  from 1- 3 p.m.; Session 3 is July 30 from 9-11 a.m.;  and Session 4 is July 30 from 1-3 p.m.

All sessions will be at Lucerne Park.

Register by June 6 for Sessions 1 and 2 and by July 25 for Sessions 3 and 4.

The cost is $5 per child per session (all sessions will be the same instruction).

For ages 6-12, there is a maximum of 8 participants per session.

Children will learn the basics of canoeing safety, loading and unloading, paddling, steering, and teamwork.

Teen canoe clinic Session 1 is June 21 from 9-11 a.m.; Session 2 is June 21 from 1-3 p.m.; Session 3 is July 26 from 9- 11 a.m.; and Session 4 is July 26 from 1-3 p.m.

All sessions are held at Lucerne Park.

Register by June 18 for Sessions 1 and 2, and by July 23 for Sessions 3 and 4.

For ages 13-18, there is a maximum of 10 teens per session.

Teens will learn the basics of canoeing safety, loading and unloading, paddling, steering, and teamwork.

Community Canoeing that is free to the public is June 5 and 23, July 12 and  28, and August 7 and 25. Each session is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Community canoeing is at Center Lake Beach (east side of swimming pier, behind Center Lake Pavilion).

Registration is not required. A waiver and rules sheet must be signed by each participant, and must be signed by a parent for anyone under age 18.

Canoes will be available for community use. Canoes are first-come, first-serve and may be used in timed increments. All equipment  and life vests are provided.  

All participants will be briefed on safety measures prior to canoeing, and all canoeing will be supervised by staff.
