Warsaw Park Board heard a proposal for the city to join a Tree City USA program Tuesday.
The board agreed to support the program and park board member Steve Haines volunteered to work with the city to draft a tree ordinance.
Park Board member Michelle Boxell made a motion for the board to support the program, seconded by Haines.
Andrea Nichols, ArborMetrics Solutions utility arborist, provided a presentation on the program.
Nichols previously spoke about the program during Monday night’s Warsaw City Council meeting.
The council requested the park board provide a recommendation to the city on joining the program.
The city still needs to approve a tree ordinance, and form a tree board to qualify for the program.
The city will hold an Arbor Day Celebration May 1 in Central Park at 9 a.m. when Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer will read an Arbor Day proclamation.
There will be trees planted including two at the east shelter in Central Park, one tree in Kelly Park, two trees in Kiwanis Park, and one tree outside the parks office.
In other business, the board heard an update on Center Lake Pavilion fascia and soffit improvements that have been made.
The board also heard an update on playground equipment at Pike Lake beach that has been removed due to aging and will be replaced.
The board also heard an update on gutters to be installed at Center Lake Pavilion. Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety previously approved a contract with Rainy Days Guttering for the installation.
The board heard American Wire Roping and Sling will install four hoists for Glover Pavilion. The hoists are used to lift the grid that has lights, signage and back drops mounted to it for concerts in the park.
The park board also heard parking lots at Central Park and Lucerne will be sealed.
The board received information on the opening of Pike Lake campground, which started its season Sunday.
The parks departments 2012 recreation guide is now on the city’s website.
Earth Day is Sunday and Larry Plummer, parks superintendent, reminded the board of the date and encouraged them to recycle.
The board reviewed a Brunch with the Bunny program report that was March 31 at Center Lake Pavilion.
There were 74 attendees and each child received a goody bag with crafts, candy and a plush duckling.
Plummer said the sewers were backed up at the Nye Youth Cabin, but the pipe has been fixed.
