Warsaw Park Board Wednesday approved a location for a 9/11 Remembrance Memorial in Warsaw.
The board approved the memorial being located on the south end of the island between the drives in front of Center Lake Pavilion.
The memorial is a two-sided granite memorial that will be approximately 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide. The site will be visible from the Glover Pavilion where 9/11 ceremonies have been held in previous years.
One side will remember and honor those that lost their lives and served during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The other side will have the names of Kosciusko County law, fire, and emergency personnel that lost their lives in the line of duty.
In 2008, The Kosciusko County 9/11 Remembrance Planning Committee requested permission to place the memorial in Central Park. At that time the board tabled the decision to review possible locations for the memorial.
The 9/11 Memorial Remembrance planning committee members Mike Cox, Ken Locke and Cathy Reed attended Wednesday's meeting to make the request for the memorial.
Cox said the committee has worked with Warsaw Community Development Corp. to raise funds for the memorial through fundraisers. The committee is more than half way completed in raising funds and plans to have the memorial up by the local 9/11 ceremony at the Glover Pavilion in Central Park.
"It's our belief that 9/11 is a tragic event that we should not forget," Cox said.
Cox said although no one from Kosciusko County died in 9/11, there are relatives who live in the county who are related to those who did.
In other business, the board approved a request from April Baxter, Senior Activity Center executive director. The request was to replace two signs at the Senior Activity Center and to change the Pete Thorn Youth Center Sign to say "Pete Thorn Center."
The board approved the sign on the Senior Activity Center used for advertising events to be replaced with a larger sign. The current sign is worn and the plastic strip is broken.
The board also approved the roadside Senior Activity Center sign be placed to alert senior citizens of the location of the center.
Changing the sign to "Pete Thorn Center" will eliminate confusion when senior citizens are going to the center to attend activities at the Senior Activity Center.
