Paramedic Struck By Patient While On Call Saturday

Posted
A Multi-Township EMS paramedic was the victim of battery after responding to 779 S. Bunting Lane in Warsaw Saturday night to a call of a man reported to be having a seizure.
The patient, Sammy L. Hyde, 49, of the same address, became violent and struck a paramedic, Cody A. Manges, 25, Leesburg, in the throat while Manges was attempting to administer care to Hyde.
Hyde fled but was later located by Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputies. Deputies placed Hyde in custody and returned him to the ambulance where he began to resist officers. Paramedics and deputies had to restrain Hyde in order to transport him to Kosciusko Community Hospital.
Hyde’s wife told deputies on scene that her husband was recently discharged from rehab related to his abuse of spice. She gave officers permission to enter the residence, where they found a brand of potpurri commonly known as spice, and a multicolored pipe, according to the sheriff’s department.
The paraphernalia was placed into evidence. Hyde exhibited signs of being under the influence of a type of drug or narcotic, deputies indicated.
Charges have been forwarded to the County Prosecutor’s Office for potential battery charges. Manges showed no visible signs of injury, according to the department.
