Need to get rid of those stacks of TV Guide, Time and People magazines?
Beginning Friday, paper recycling containers will be at every recycling station in the county, Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District Director Marsha Eikenberry said Wednesday. Instead of paper recycling days, the containers will provide county residents the means to recycle paper 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
To recycle the paper products, newspapers and cardboard should be separated. Paperboard may be placed with mixed paper. Mixed paper, which includes glossy magazines, should be separated from newspapers and cardboard. Phone books may be recycled too, but the covers go with mixed paper and the rest of the books can be mixed with paper.
Next month, Eikenberry said, a survey will be conducted at supermarkets to find out what people think about the different aspects of recycling in Kosciusko County.
The KCSWMD board discussed the need for curbside recycling in Warsaw.
David Delp, the Winona Lake representative to the board, said the Winona Lake curbside recycling program is working well.
The biggest question the district receives, Eikenberry said, is why there is no curbside recycling in Warsaw and in the county.
Any information received from the district's planned supermarket survey, Warsaw representative Joe Thallemer said, could help Warsaw. He said a curbside recycling program for Warsaw needs to be carefully studied.
"It's not going to work if you don't do it properly," Thallemer said.
Earth Day will be April 22 at Central Park in Warsaw.
"This year, we're doing it with the Warsaw Parks Department Easter Egg Hunt, so we're expecting a lot of people," Eikenberry said.
A "Design a T-Shirt" contest will be held. The winning entry will win a T-shirt for themselves and all of their classmates. The winner also will receive a $150 U.S. Savings Bond. Second place will receive a $100 savings bond. Third place will receive a $50 Warsaw Chamber of Commerce gift certificate.
The contest is open to students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
Entries must be mailed to the district's office and must follow guidelines. For more information, contact the KCSWMD at 219-372-3087.
Other Earth Day contests will include an Easter Egg decorating contest and an Earth Day "design a milk jug" contest.
Avis Gunter was named as the district's board chairwoman and David Delp was appointed as vice chairman. Thallemer said he will serve as chairman next year. This is Thallemer's first year serving on the district board.
