I knew it. I knew that if I openly basked in the glow of the two weeks of silence from Sarah Palin in regards to Egypt that I would be jinxing it. And like clockwork it happened. No sooner had I sent a letter to the Times-Union mentioning the refreshing silence from the Palin camp did Sarah Palin go out and break her silence on the Christian Broadcasting Network and show more of the irrational hatred of our president that the GOP seems to share.
Now before I start quoting her, one must remember that the quotes are coming from a person who could not govern a state with a population of fewer than 700,000 yet feels comfortable telling a country of 79 million who should govern them. This is a person well versed at delivering the typical talking points that make her sycophants stand up and cheer. But other than that she has little to offer on the crisis in Egypt.
The first quote from Sarah Palin regarding the uprising in Egypt was, "We want to be able to trust those who are screaming for democracy there in Egypt, that it is a true sincere desire for freedoms."
Now does it really matter what we want? Does it matter who we trust? Aren't the desires of the Egyptian people more important than ours? Should we not let the Egyptians choose their own path? If grassroots democracy is so great then why is Sarah Palin trying to impose her idea of democracy on the Egyptians? Perhaps it is just another attempt by her to stay relevant.
Palin went on to say, "How do we verify what it is that we are being told, what it is that the American public are being fed via media, via the protestors, via the government there in Egypt in order for us to really have some sound information to make wise decisions on what our position is?" She continued, "We need to find out who was behind all of the turmoil and the revolt and the protests so that good decisions can be made in terms of who we will stand by and support."
Again our decisions should come after the people of Egypt have decided for themselves who will govern them. So to state that we need verification is foolish. What are we going to do with that verification? Are we going to stop the democratic movement because we dislike who's behind it? Are we that willing to pick their leaders for them? Does Palin realize that it is that thought process that makes us a target?
Palin continued. On the possibility that the Muslim Brotherhood might take power, Palin stated "We should not stand for that, or with that or by that." So are we to pick the leaders of other nations now?
I wonder how Palin and her fans would feel if politicians of other nations made those same statements regarding our electoral process. What would happen if they openly interfered with our democracy? What if they spoke out against our political movements and questioned who was behind them? Should those foreign politicians have a say in who governs us?
Sarah Palin is a victim of being in a bubble where she only speaks to people and appears on shows that agree with her and where the hosts will not challenge her positions. She lives in a world where she can make uninformed comments on Twitter and Facebook and not be challenged. She's trapped in a cycle of affirmation where opposing viewpoints are not allowed the light of day. So perhaps she doesn't know that what comes out of her mouth lacks gravitas because there is no one there willing to tell her so.
Perhaps that's why her fellow GOP members cringe when she speaks and fall over each other while trying to distance themselves from her.
