WABASH – The Honeywell Center will present two performances of a live stage show titled “The Snail and the Whale” March 6 at 10 a.m. and noon in the Ford Theater.
The 60-minute performance is a part of the Honeywell Foundation Educational Outreach Program and is recommended for grades kindergarten through sixth. During the school year, Page-to-Stage Student Matinees are provided at a low cost for school groups.
“The Snail and the Whale” is full of physical storytelling, live music and lots of laughs. A tiny snail longs to see the world, so she hitches a lift on the tail of a humpback whale. But when the whale gets beached, how will the snail save him?
Follow the tiny snail’s journey, as seen through the eyes of a young girl and her seafaring father. According to the press release, students who attend are not only entertained, they also benefit from the curriculum-based components of this “page to stage” program that features language arts, role playing, problem solving, imagination, storytelling, vocabulary and reading. Also, the repetitions of rhymes from the book are used throughout the show. Narration and live music are used to aid the storytelling.
Adapted from the picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, which was written in 2010, this production of “The Snail and the Whale” was inspired by Storybook Soldiers, an organization which helps British military personnel serving abroad record bedtime stories for their children to listen to while they are away. This is happening across Afghanistan and other countries where British military are present. Thousands of families have discovered there is nothing better to bridge the distance than the sound of a parent’s voice reading, the release states.
Tickets to the “Snail and the Whale” are $6 for groups of nine or less and $4 for groups of 10 or more. Seating is limited.
