Overtime Heroics Lift MU To Homecoming Week VictoryNORTH MANCHESTER – Sophomore midfielder Samuel Tetteh-Quarshie picked a great time to register his first collegiate multiple-goal effort. Tallying scores in the 36th and 94th minutes, the Acra, Ghana, native moved to the top of Manchester University’s goals chart and into a tie for the points lead. More importantly though, the two goals enabled the Black and Gold to capture a pivotal 3-2 overtime victory over Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Anderson University Wednesday. Both of his scoring strikes gave MU (7-2-2 overall, 1-1 HCAC) leads. The first was off a pass inside the 18 from freshman midfielder Alex Baker, setting him up perfectly for a blast that eluded AU net minder Ben Lapham for a 2-1 advantage late in the first half. The second, a game-winner in front of a loud and appreciative Good Field crowd of over 100 fans, was placed on his forehead off a crossing shot from senior midfielder Ola Ladapo in the 94th minute sending the program to its first win over its rivals since 2008 and the first home series decision since 2007. Along with the final score, the remaining match statistics were nip-and-tuck. The two sides each generated 14 total shots with the Spartans holding a slim 8-6 lead in shots on goal. AU tallied one more save (5-4) and corner kick (4-3), and the home team dished out one more assist than its guests. Ladapo topped MU’s overall shot totals with three, and junior goalkeeper Brady Forman wound up with three saves to lead other individual categories. The Spartans, sitting tied for fourth on the league standings with Earlham, resume a pair of critical Homecoming Week 2016 clashes Saturday, Oct. 8. Loop leader Rose-Hulman comes to town for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
Five-Set Victory Part Of Historic Evening ANDERSON, IND. – An early attack on an October evening at Anderson University’s O.C. Lewis Gymnasium will go down in Manchester University’s annals. When senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning took a set from sophomore Dakota Stanichuk and drilled it to the floor on the Ravens’ side of the court Wednesday she became the program’s fourth-member of the 1,000 career kills club. More importantly, it was one of a team-high 18 kills as part of a thrilling 21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-15, 15-13 victory over MU’s league rivals. Her efforts didn’t end there, either. She recorded her eighth kills-digs double-double with 25 defensive saves and also served up two aces. Chowning’s totals were just part of the story, as Coach Bryndon Paulsen’s crew was again balanced offensively. Sophomore right side hitter Haley Duncan tallied 15 kills as part of a .216 attack percentage to go along with four block assists; sophomore middle hitter Hannah Tevis finished with 13 kills, a .357 attack percentage and three block assists; sophomore outside hitter Farren Miller tallied 11 kills, 13 digs, and a pair of service aces; and Stanichuk wound up with 60 assists and two service aces. The Black and Gold’s first victory at AU since 2008 took every bit of the statistical accomplishments mentioned above. After being limited to hitting .125 or less in the first three sets with the hosts taking a 2-1 advantage, Manchester University responded with back-to-back meteoric .300-or-above attack percentages in the final two sets to propel themselves to the victory. MU (11-6 overall, 3-2 HCAC) steps out of conference competition Saturday, Oct. 8. They travel to Huntington University for matches against the Foresters and Aquinas College of Michigan at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
AU Adges MU In HCAC Meeting ANDERSON – Sophomore forward/midfielder Maranda Birmingham and junior midfielder Courtney Hersick combined for seven shot attempts, and sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Smith compiled her second successive double-digit save outing, highlighting a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference road match for Manchester University Wednesday. Hersick’s four shots, all of which were aimed directly at Anderson University goalkeeper Rebecca Roell’s end of Macholtz Stadium along with one that found the back of the Ravens’ net, topped the Spartans (0-8 overall, 0-2 HCAC) in a tight-knit 3-1 loss. After AU fired off a scoring strike in the first 10 minutes, Smith and her counterpart kept the scoreboard quiet until Hersick launched her fifth goal of the season in the 62nd minute for a 1-1 tie. From there, the home side answered back with a pair of tallies off the foot of Taylor Hurley in the 69th and 82nd minutes to seal the decision. Birmingham closed her evening with three shot attempts, one of which was on goal. Smith turned in 11 saves in the midst of a 33-11 AU strike advantage. The Spartans return to Good Field at the Spartan Soccer Complex Saturday beginning back-to-back home matches with Rose-Hulman’s visit. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
