RICHMOND - Whitney Ousley, an Earlham College first-year student and daughter of LaDonna and Burnis Ousley, Warsaw, recently completed Earlham's August Mountain Wilderness program in the Uinta mountain range of Northern Utah.
For three weeks in August, Ousley hiked the alpine lake regions. When the weather and skills warranted, rock climbing also was part of the adventure.
The program taught outdoor skills such as cooking, first aid, Leave-No-Trace camping and map and compass navigation. In addition, course work in the local history, geology and ecology of the area combined with facilitated discussion on such topics as leadership, decision-making and conflict resolution were woven throughout the experience.
The Wilderness Program at Earlham is one of the oldest and most comprehensive programs of its kind in the country. It features a unique liberal arts approach to outdoor and experiential education.
