Students at Washington STEM Academy are not just learning about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); they're experiencing it firsthand through community partnerships.
On Jan. 18, a team from OrthoPediatrics visited the academy to lead a hands-on lab with the sixth-grade students, giving them a glimpse into careers in pediatric orthopedics. Employees from OrthoPediatrics didn't just talk about their day-to-day responsibilities; they shared their career journeys, emphasizing the importance of career readiness, according to a news release from Warsaw Community Schools. This interactive session allowed students to explore the world of orthopedics for children, a critical aspect of STEM education.
Since 2006, OrthoPediatrics has been at the forefront of pediatric orthopedics, innovating new products and creating enriching career opportunities, the release states.
"Helping kids is central to everything we do at OrthoPediatrics," said Mallory Trusty, vice president of the OP experience. "Our engagement extends beyond our products and services. We're committed to improving the lives of children globally, starting right here in our backyard with the Warsaw schools."
Principal Cheri Sleighter and Instructional Coach Derek Pike of Washington STEM Academy understand the immense value these partnerships bring.
"Such collaborations drive our students' desire for learning and growth," Sleighter said.
Pike said, "Connecting with community members like OrthoPediatrics enhances our Project-Based Learning, adding real-world context to our STEM curriculum."
