Organ Donation

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

April is Organ Donation Awareness Month.

More than 6,000 people a year die waiting for transplant while neighbors are burying or cremating 20,000 organs a year. According to a Gallup poll, 95 percent of Americans said they support organ donation, but only 78 percent of those surveyed said they would donate their organs.

The demand for organs continues to grow faster than the supply. Each week, the U.S. government says, more than a hundred Americans who need transplants die before receiving them. There are now more than 95,000 people on the national waiting list, according to UNOS.

April is Organ Donation Awareness Month. Please become an organ and tissue donor.

My daughter is alive and healthy today because of a liver transplant. A very wonderful family made the decision that even in their own grief they would save another's life. While losing a child, they chose to save another. What a gift! Are you willing to give that gift? Please consider it. You never know when organ donation will touch your life.
