Doug Ogle, Warsaw Community High School boys basketball varsity head coach, will continue in his position for the 2006-07 school year.
Interim Superintendent Ralph Bailey made the announcement at Monday's school board meeting, his last meeting serving in the position. Dr. Robert Haworth takes over as superintendent July 1.
Bailey read his prepared statement on Ogle near the end of Monday's meeting. No one else, including school board members, prior to or after Bailey's remarks, made any comment regarding Ogle.
In his comments, Bailey said, "Personnel issues are usually not discussed in a public meeting. Since Doug Ogle is such an interest to many people in the community, I will respond.
"It is my philosophy that it is the responsibility of the administration to evaluate all extracurricular activities for contract renewal whether it is coaches of sports or coaches of many other activities."
Bailey indicated Warsaw Schools has more than 100 extracurricular activities.
"I have had several meetings with Doug and others to evaluate his continuing as varsity basketball coach," Bailey continued.
"The most recent meeting was on June 7 with Doug, Terry Sims, Jennifer Brumfield, Dave Fulkerson and myself. We looked at all areas of his coaching. We, therefore, indicated to Doug that he was to continue as head varsity boys coach for the 2006-07 (season).
"We did set a number of goals that he must meet. The administrators will again evaluate him at the end of the basketball season to see if he has achieved these goals."
Bailey said Ogle did sign on to those goals and did not indicate what the goals are. He then read off Ogle's record as varsity basketball head coach: 14 wins, 7 losses during the 2002-03 season; 14-8 in 2003-04, and won the Northern Lakes Conference; 14-8 in 2004-05; and 11-12 in 2005-06, and won the sectional championship.
Bailey also provided revenue figures for boys basketball.
Under former Head Coach Al Rhodes, the program generated $89,880 in 1995-96, but that dropped to $56,230 by 2001-02, a difference of $33,650. (In 1996, Rhodes' team, which included Mr. Basketball Kevin Ault, made it to the Indiana High School Athletic Association Final Four. The following year, 1997, was the last tournament featuring a single class. Indiana then went to class basketball.)
Under Ogle, the basketball program generated $50,689 in 2002-03, which dropped $4,664 in 2005-06 to $46,025.
"We not only evaluated the wins and losses," said Bailey in conclusion, "but many areas."
Ogle was not in attendance at the meeting. When contacted after the meeting, Ogle declined to comment.
