Officials Toil To Assess Storm Damage

Posted
NAPPANEE - Officials in Elkhart and Kosciusko counties are working today to get a final assessment of the damage caused by the EF3 tornado that hit Nappanee and Scott Township Thursday night.

Nappanee Police Chief Mike Anglin said the majority of buildings damaged in the storm were homes. He said officials do not yet have an official count of how many Nappanee homes were damaged. Anglin said a boil order has been lifted in the town, and most area businesses not damaged by the tornado are open. Anglin said some businesses remained closed because electric power had not yet been restored to their facilities.

Anglin said his department is collecting data from all property owners whose property was damaged by the tornado. The data will be used to assess how much federal aid will be dispensed to help the area recover. Those with tornado damage are asked to report the damage by calling 574-773-4111.

Kosciusko County Emergency Management Director Ed Rock said assessment of damage in Scott Township is nearly complete. Rock said the tornado destroyed 11 homes, caused major damage to five more and minor damage to 16. Rock said one business was destroyed and three businesses suffered minor damage.

Kosciusko County officials have estimated the damage in Scott Township to exceed $3 million. Kosciusko County residents whose property was damaged by the tornado are asked to report the damage by calling 574-267-7888.
