NORTH MANCHESTER – The name of the North Manchester Police Department officer involved in Tuesday’s shooting was released by Chief Jim Kirk in a news release Wednesday afternoon.

At 5:58 p.m. Tuesday, NMPD officer Parker Stouffer made a traffic stop for an infraction while working Operation Pullover. Sgt. Nate Birch pulled his vehicle in behind Stouffer to assist. A third NMPD officer, Issac Adams, also was on scene when the driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck, Michael Kline, 40, of North Manchester, pulled a gun and aimed it at the officers, according to the release. Stouffer then shot Kline, fatally wounding him.

The police action shooting occurred in the parking lot of The Eel River Inn, Ind. 114, North Manchester.

The release states that while three officers were on the scene, only Stouffer discharged his weapon.

Officers and first responders at the scene performed CPR on Kline to no avail.

The Indiana State Police are investigating the shooting.

WANE TV reported Tuesday night that Kirk said the officer who fired his gun was wearing a body cam but it was covered up by his jacket. The news station also reported the officer was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the ISP investigation.

Also assisting at the scene were officers from Wabash Police Department, Wabash County Sheriff’s Department and ISP; North Manchester Fire Department; Chester Township Fire Department; the Wabash County coroner and Parkview Hospital ambulance.
