Odd Jobs

Posted

Sixth-grade students in Robin Reichard’s class from Madison Elementary finished the year with a class project. Students earned money by doing odd jobs or selling things to purchase something to benefit families in another part of the world. They discussed the possibilities of providing baby chicks, fruit trees, stocking a fish pond or even purchasing a dairy animal. They named the project the HUG project, which stood for “Help Us Grow.” They decided to begin the project and see how much money they could earn before deciding which items could be purchased. On the last day of school when the final total was announced, students had brought in enough money to purchase a dairy animal and supply milk and other nutrition for a child for one week. Students got interested in this project initially by participating in Operation Christmas Child through Samaritan’s Purse in which they sent nine boxes to children in Sudan and the Central African Republic. After learning about the destination of their boxes, they read articles telling of the needs of children in that part of the world.
