WINONA LAKE - The hope for Bill Firstenberger and his wife was to create some dialogue about the upcoming presidential election.
Firstenberger supports Sen. Barack Obama, while his wife is a supporter of Sen. John McCain. The Firstenbergers decided to place political signs for both campaigns on the lawn of their home on Westwood Drive in Winona Lake.
Not two days passed before somebody decided to reduce the Firstenbergers' two-party home to one.
At some point Thursday night, the Obama sign was removed from his home.
He contacted the Winona Lake Police Department but decided against filing a report on the $8 sign.
"My wife and I share different political views," said Bill Firstenberger. "I had the sign for just two days.
"We just wanted to create a discussion amongst people, not try and push our beliefs on anybody."
When Firstenberger talked to the Winona Lake Police Department, the officer he dealt with said political signs have been stolen around the county.
The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department and the Warsaw Police Department both stated no reports were filed concerning the theft of political signs. But both department spokespersons said that people may not decide to file a report because most political signs are free.
According to several polls, this year's presidential election has added significance in Indiana. State polls have Obama and McCain in a tight race.
A Democrat hasn't won Indiana in a presidential election since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964.
