Oakwood Sexton Updates Board Of Regents On Preacher’s StandSexton Hal Heagy updated the Oakwood Cemetery Board of Regents on the Preacher’s Stand Thursday.
The Preacher’s Stand is a pavilion-like structure with auditorium-like seating behind the cemetery’s office.
During October’s meeting, Heagy asked for input from the Board on whether he should invest money to fix up the Preacher’s Stand or take it down. He said things are starting to fall off the building and he has to put money into fixing it or have it taken down.
In December, the Board approved the Preacher’s Stand to be taken down. After being asked to reconsider the decision, Heagy brought the issue back up to the Board and, in March, they decided to keep the Preacher’s Stand and have the repairs done.
Thursday, Heagy said he’s been through all the repairs that need to be done with the Preacher’s Stand, which includes new doors in the back, new seating, repainting, a new gutter and new concrete in front. Heagy said he got a quote for everything except the gutter and it is just under $2,000, which is just for the materials. Heagy said he can do most of the work in-house.
Heagy didn’t have a timeframe of when the work will be done, but he said staff will work it in their routine when they have time.
In other business, the Board learned:
• Memorial Day service will be at 11 a.m. May 30 at the Preacher’s Stand.
• Work on sodding winter graves was finished Thursday. Heagy said during the summer, the sod is cut and is hidden. When the person is buried, cemetery staff puts the sod back on.
“We want it to look like nothing happened,” Heagy said.
During the winter, Heagy said cemetery staff can’t do that. The cemetery has a sod farm and, when weather breaks, sod is cut and graves are covered.
• There was a water leak Tuesday by the Preacher’s Stand. Cemetery staff spent Wednesday digging out the water line in order to get it fixed.
• Heagy wants to possibly clean up some language in the cemetery’s rules to make them clearer. None of the rules would actually change.
He gave the changes to the Board last month to have members look the changes over.
Heagy said he’s hoping for the Board to vote on the changes during its May 5 meeting.
