Oakwood Regency Board Denies Request

Posted

In an effort to continue uniformity standards inside Oakwood Cemetery, the regency board denied a request Thursday to reposition a tombstone near the cremation garden.

The petition came from a family who wanted to rotate a tombstone to face west, while surrounding headstones face east. The move would have allowed the tombstone to be read from Cemetery Drive, which is adjacent to the plat.

"If we allowed this one, I think we'll have to do it for more," Regency Secretary Ellen Hoffer said. "And then everything will become out of sync."

The reposition request asked that engraving on the headstone face away from its burial site, a placement members said has never been used inside the cemetery.

Sexton David Shaw reported 19 burials last month, and members signed 10 new plat deeds.

Members are Hoffer, Warren Tatter, Bob Sandy and Lewis Dobbins.

The next meeting is scheduled for May 4.
