Oakwood Board OKs Cemetery Expansion

Posted
The Oakwood Cemetery Board of Regents approved installing additional lots at the cemetery at its meeting Thursday night.

Tom Kinch, a Post 49 member, suggested the cemetery consider adding 17 to 20 additional lots to Legion Circle No. 2.

The second circle currently has 16 lots.

"I am for anything that will create more lots," said Cemetery Board President Warren Tatter.

Kinch said the lot construction will not begin until this summer.

American Legion Post 49 also has been working on raising money to put a third ring in Legion Circle No. 3. Fill dirt is being donated, and a drive to raise $10,500 is underway to complete the project.

Tatter also informed the board he has spoken with Mayor Ernie Wiggins about suggesting Warsaw resident Tom Balazs serve as the cemetery's sexton.

The sexton is appointed by the mayor and will need to be approved by the Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety. A sexton is needed to replace former Sexton Duane Ronk, who died.

Balazs has worked at the cemetery for four years, Tatter said.

There were eight deeds signed during the meeting.

The board also discussed upgrading the stone wall in the cemetery's Cremation Gardens.

Warsaw architect John Churchill submitted his estimate to upgrade the wall, totaling $5,700 for materials and labor.

Tatter said he will discuss the estimate with Churchill.

Board members are Tatter, Lewis Dobbins, Bob Sandy and City Council Representative Bob Morrison.
