The North Webster Community Center held its first annual Pickleball Tournament Saturday. The event had three different age divisions for play. The 75+ age group played at 8:30 a.m., the 55+ age group played at 10:30 a.m. and the Open Age group started around 2 p.m. There were a total of 56 registered players from Warsaw, North Webster, Syracuse and Ft. Wayne. Each participant received a t-shirt and trophies were awarded to the winners. The event was sponsored by Tom Roebuck of Village Express and the North Webster Community Center, with generous donations from New Market-Syracuse. The event was a round-robin tournament, so many players met their partners for the first time on the court. The event brought in players of all skill levels for some great matches. Volunteers helped with registration, passed out t-shirts and served as ball chasers and the North Webster Latchkey program staff and students provided concessions. North Webster Community Center Director Erin Smith said she was “pleased with the turnout for the event.” The Center has Pickleball in the mornings from 9 a.m. to noon during the week for more serious players and has Family Pickleball on Thursday evenings from 5:30-7:30 p.m. NWCC hopes to offer classes for those interested in learning about the game in the spring or summer.
