Northern Lights

Posted

This 15-minute time exposure chronicles last night's northern lights display. According to an area astronomer, a solar flare last Sunday caused the 'lights' to be visible in northern Indiana and southern Michigan. While northern lights - or aurora borealis - are common in places like Alaska and northern Canada, occurrences in the Midwest are more rare. The phenomenon is expected to be visible again tonight in the northern sky, in the vicinity of the Big Dipper. The photo was taken looking north from CR 700N, just west of Leesburg, at approximately 1:30 a.m. Time lapse photography enhances the effect. Photo by Gary Nieter, Times-Union
