North Webster Vacates Alley

NORTH WEBSTER – The North Webster Town Council approved an undeveloped alley to be vacated by the town.

Dean Anderson asked the town to vacate a thin strip of land between two properties he owns on Blaine Street in North Webster.

While the strip was platted years ago to be an alley it was never developed as such by the town.

Anderson has maintained the property at his own cost.

Town board president Jon Sroufe said he saw no advantage to the town keeping the property but also noted that as a rule, the town typically doesn’t get involved in vacation requests.

“Don’t want to set a precedent,” said Sroufe. “I think in the future we’ll look at each situation on its own.”

Councilman Tim Hine said he felt that Anderson’s request was a unique once since he owns the property on both sides of the strip of land.

Town council also approved several projects for their utilities company, Severn Trent.

A Huber micro-screen was installed at the town’s wastewater plant in 2004.

With more than 11,000 hours of service, the town council approved to repair it as well as a control panel. The control panel will be moved outside the treatment plant.

The cost was listed at more than $18,700.

The screen helps filter items that come in through the sewer system.

It was noted that when inorganic trash comes through it puts more of a strain on the system.

A pump at one of the town’s stations will also be rebuilt.

The council was also informed that North Webster was recently recognized by the state for excellence in safety.

The town scored 98 out of 100 on a criteria of more than 100 items.

The police department will look to sell a squad car that was involved in a wreck earlier this year.

The insurance company has settled with the town already.

Town Marshal Greg Church said he checked with town attorney Jack Birch and despite the fact that both airbags deployed, it is legal for the town to sell the car.

Sroufe recognized Severn Trent’s Paul Erst who is retiring at the end of the year, saying Erst has been a “real asset to the town.”

The town council passed its first ordinance of the year to allow for the Anderson vacation request.

Another ordinance was passed to allow for a supplement to the town’s code book.

The town council will hold a year-end meeting Dec. 28 at 8:30 a.m. at the town hall.
