NORTH WEBSTER – Instead of selling calorie-heavy chocolates or other food goods for a fundraiser, North Webster Elementary School is raising money for its library in a healthy way again this year. North Webster PTO is sponsoring a Walk-a-thon Sept. 20. The school likes to do this in place of selling items because it has found that people would rather donate than buy things they really don’t want, according to PTO President Kristin Bonner. The school’s profit is greater and the Walk-a-thon is something that promotes good health for the kids. Each student is asked to gather donations from friends and family members to sponsor them in the Walk-a-thon. All of this money is due Monday in an envelope that will be provided. Each student who walks in the event will be given a Warrior Walk-a-thon shirt that promotes the project for this year, which is improving the library. These shirts are being provided by the PTO and local businesses who have donated funds for the cause. Major donations came from the Warsaw Meijer store, Maverick Promotions, the North Webster Lions Club, the North Webster Lady Lions and Renea’s Class Act Karaoke and DJ Service. These businesses made the shirts for each student possible. Other businesses that donated to defray costs are Dixie Sternwheeler Inc., The Paper, Pletcher Insurance Inc., Precision Wire, Likens and Sons Construction and Ace Hardware of North Webster. The teachers will be participating in a relay race at 2 p.m. during the Walk-a-thon. That always gets the kids excited. After that the school will have a dance party outside on the playground. Each student who collects $20 or more will be invited to a sock hop style dance party Sept. 26 after school. The school has hired a DJ and will provide snacks for these students. Each student who collects $50 or more will receive a MudLOVE band that says READ. It will be used throughout the year to support the library and when worn to school will make students eligible for random prizes throughout the year. The top five students who collect the most money will win a Kindle Fire. This device also promotes reading. The school chose to reward the top five sellers, rather than only one or two, because so many kids do so well the school wanted to reward more of them. Meijer donated four of the five Kindle Fires. This is North Webster Elementary School’s biggest fundraiser of the year. There are many ways to help. You can donate through a student, sponsor the event with a donation from your business or family, help manage kids at the Walk-a-thon or chaperone the dance. This year’s PTO officers are Bonner, Vice President Shannon Rose, Secretary Mindy Coblentz and Treasurer Kassy Klinefelter.
