North Webster Council Approves Sewer Rate Increase

Posted
NORTH WEBSTER – Effective March 1, the sewer rate will be increased by $3 a month.

Councilwoman Lisa Strombeck said the town hasn’t had a rate increase since 2014. Councilman Dave  Waliczek said the town didn’t want to raise rates, but the sewer utility was in the red.

Sewer rates are calculated  dependant on whether the building is residential, commercial, industrial, governmental, etc., said Clerk-Treasurer Leigh Anne Jessop.

It will bring the rate up for a single-family residence, apartment, duplexes, etc., and mobile home court per space to $52. The sewer rate will be increased for a retail establishment with one to three employees to $52; funeral home, $101; manufacturing  (sanitary) with one to three employees $52; office with one to three employees, $52; churches/lodges, etc. is $52 per each 200 members or fraction thereof; among others.

In other business, Michael Y. Wyrick, president of the Webster Lake Conservation Association, said the association has been studying muck and sentiment removal in the lake. He said the association applied for a grant through the Lake and River Enhancement Program this year. He just got a letter from the program saying the program doesn’t have enough money and they’re cutting back on some of their fund checks. Wyrick said the association was encouraged to apply next year for the grant.

He said he wanted to bring to the attention of the council some of the problem is the stormwater runoff going through the town drains, which remain unfiltered. In 2018, Wyrick said he appeared in front of the council to show them how much muck and sentiment was going into the lake. He said not much was done after that.

Mike Noe, Inframark project manager, said for the streets, the town used to do sand and salt for storms, but no longer uses sand. Wyrick said it’s not just sand and gravel that’s going into the lake.

Waliczek asked Noe what kind of filters are being put on the drains by the lake. Noe said there are no filters down there. Waliczek asked if Noe could look into filters to help with the issue.
