NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊThe Manchester Squires and Whitko Wildcats met in North Manchester for a volleyball match Thursday. The Squires defeated the Wildcats 15-9, 5-15, 15-11.

Jessica Hicks led the Squires with eight kills, five digs and two aces, while Samantha Miller led the Wildcats with on ace, four kills, two digs and 10 assists.

Manchester is now 1-1 on the season, while Whitko falls 0-2. The Squires host the Manchester Invitational Saturday, and Whitko will travel to Warsaw Tuesday.

Thursday in Marion

The Warsaw boys soccer team traveled to Marion Thursday evening and played the Giants to a 2-2 stalemate. Poor field conditions forced the Tigers to make several adjustments to their game plan. "The poor conditions of the playing field and its extremely small size really hurt our passing game," said Warsaw coach Scott Bauer. "It ended up being more of a kickball game than a soccer game." Marion jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Warsaw fought back in the second period to tie the score at two with goals from Mark Grossnickle and Adam Hodge. "The guys showed real character in the way they came back in the second half," said Bauer. It wasn't pretty, but they guys played with character." Warsaw is now 0-0-2 and will play at South Bend Riley Tuesday.

Lakeland Christian Academy's boys soccer team opened its season with a 9-0 win over Ft. Wayne Christian. The Cougars had 35 shots on goal, compared to Ft. Wayne's seven. andre Virgilio led the Cougars with four goals. LCA will be in action Saturday in its Jamboree.

The Wawasee boys tennis team started the season on the right foot by winning the opening match over West Noble 4-1 Thursday. Evan Gerard (No. 2 singles), Rosten Trobaugh (No. 3 singles), Mickey Ashpole and Logan Pilcher (No. 1 doubles) and Seth Beer and Robbie Trame (No. 2 doubles) all earned wins for the Warriors.
