Nonprofits ask county for increased contributions

Posted

From 1994 to the upcoming 2004 year, the requests by local not-for-profit organizations for contributions from the Kosciusko County Commissioners' budget has almost doubled.

Each year, the nonprofits make requests to the commissioners, who then consider those requests and may add those amounts to their budget for the next year. The Kosciusko County Council has final approval or denial of those amounts.

Many of the organizations told the commissioners Tuesday that without their support, they wouldn't be here today.

For 2004, the Kosciusko County Fair Board is asking for an estimated $49,948. In 2003, they received $44,771, and in 1994, $13,500.

Kosciusko Development Inc. is proposing the commissioners fund $80,000 for them in 2004, compared to $35,000 this year and every year since 1998. In 1994, they received $50,000.

Cardinal Center's proposal for 2004 is $110,000, compared to $95,000 in 2003 and 2002 and $117,000 in 2001. The $15,000 increase proposed for next year compared to this year is to help fund the Sus Amigos program. They received $65,000 in 1994.

Home Health Care is requesting $50,000, for the third straight year. In 1994, they received $20,000.

While in 1994 the Kosciusko County Historical Society received $20,000, they are asking for $23,000 in 2004, the same amount they have received since 1999.

In 1994, the Beaman Home received $17,270, and in 2003, $31,500. For 2004, they are requesting $34,000.

At $40,000, the Kosciusko Council on Aging and Aged is asking for $8,500 more than their 2003 request. In 1994, they received $25,000.

The St. Joe River Basin has been requesting funds from the commissioners only since 2001, and that amount has stayed the same every year since - $500.

Arrow Head RC&I also has requested only $500 every year. They have been making their request since 1994.

Last year, Combined Community Services was denied any funds. For 2004, they requested $20,000.

Tippecanoe Environmental was denied any funds for this year and made no requests this year for next year.

Requests for 2004 total $477,248, compared to $381,071 in 2003 and $248,170 in 1994.
