'No' to Dredging

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:
The Lagrange County Lakes Council fully supports the efforts of the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation in their opposition to the proposed dredging of the Oakwood Park shoreline.  This project does not warrant the potential risk of harm to the quality of the Wawasee Lake water and the quality of life on Indiana’s largest natural lake.

Dredging 827 feet of Oakwood’s shoreline would release phosphorous and nutrients from the sediment on the lake bottom. Large amounts of either would have a huge negative impact on the whole lake ecosystem, and would alter the natural contour of the lakebed.

It is important for us all to balance commerce and environment. An environmental disaster on Lake Wawasee would be an economic disaster for Syracuse and the entire Wawasee area.

Please take action now to prevent approval of the dredging.  Email or write the DNR: Michael W. Neyer, P.E., Director, IDNR, Division of Water, 402 W. Washington St., W264, Indianapolis, IN 46204; MNeyer@dnr.IN.gov
