No Republic

Editor, Times-Union:

There is one thing I can never get used to. It's all this talk about a democracy. The founding fathers were pretty clear about their feelings on democracy. That's why they gave us a Republic. And as wise old Ben Franklin said, "We give you a Republic if you can keep it." Well, we haven't kept it. It hasn't been a Republic at least since the Civil War. Because whether you like it or not, the states agreed to a federal form of government always holding on to the option of leaving the Union. For whatever reason they deemed necessary. But that's old news, now they tell us we have a democracy. The very short-lived democracy was a failure. And every time it's been tried, at least in name, it has failed ever since.

Simply because maintaining a democracy is extremely hard work. For a number of reasons the majority of the populace have never put the work into it that is needed. A very large sector of the country has never voted. Most because they don't care, but a sizable number understanding that in the long run, no matter which party wins, it makes little difference.

If the Fat Cats had really trusted a true democracy we would have proportional representation so even the tiny political factions would have a chance to have a few seats in the government. As it is now, and has been for a long time, we have a two-party dictatorship which is slowly becoming a one-party dictatorship combining the two.

It is amusing when the president insists on spreading democracy around the world usually by force of arms. Is that like we must bomb the village to save the village?

We've also allowed something our forefathers fled Europe to get out of, and that was the disproportionate influence of religion on the state.

With tax exemption the income of the church business is over $455 billion a year. Something tells me if all that money wasn't changing hands, there wouldn't be too many people in church on Sunday.

Every time elections roll around, people who pay no attention at all to politics in between elections become geniuses. And the people running for office tell them so. Myself, I monitor and record news worldwide nearly 24 hours a day. Believe me, the news you get in most areas of the country is barely scratching the surface. Without satellite and Internet, you're totally blind to the stories behind the stories. So the geniuses vote based upon what they hear on WOWO or Rush Scumbaugh the draft dodger. Stories like Obama being born in Kenya from a 17-year-old mother, which disqualifies him from running for president. Your mother must have been 18 at the time of birth. Or John McCain's real war record (Vietnam Veterans Against McCain.com). Or McCain's real involvement in the Keating fraud. At this point, it doesn't make much difference anyhow. The economic monsters have performed their coup d'etat and America is through as we have known it.

Put on your seat belts. It's going to be a wild ride.
