No Refund Forthcoming For Rained-Out Vassar Concert

The parks department signed Phil Vassar at a bargain rate last year, before he received the Academy of Country Music's top new male vocalist of the year award.

When the Phil Vassar concert was cancelled due to rain, the parks department was hoping to recoup some of the $16,500 concert fees. They've received word from booking agent Kevin Roberts, though, no refund will be forthcoming.

Activity director Janelle Wilson looked into rescheduling Vassar at a later date at the same price.

Vassar's concert price has risen with his fame, said Wilson, and the asking price is now between $26,000 and $30,000.

No rain location or date was set out in the original contract.

Wilson appeared before the Warsaw board of works Friday with two more concert contracts, however, which were approved.

Rock band Soulfire will perform in the Central Park's plaza Sept. 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $500; and the bluegrass group Rural Route will perform from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 6 for $400.

Park superintendent Jon Garber received permission to apply for a $500 environmental grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation to purchase trees.

In other business the board:

• Received a letter of credit in lieu of a performance bond from Lake City Bank in the amount of $25,000 for Harvest Leasing Corp.

• Approved a contract with VIM Recycling Inc., Goshen, to grind brush and stumps at a cost not to exceed $9,875 per day. The work was performed in June.

• Filed a statement with the Division of Land Acquisition, Indiana Department of Transportation, Indianapolis, to comply with the Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Property Acquisition Policies Act of 1978, amended in 1987, when acquiring real property with federal funds.

• Approved a grant application for Operation Pullover as requested by the police department. The Warsaw Police Department's portion of the grant will be $5,586.75. There is no local match for the grant necessary.

• Received notice that Shirley Mitchel, the police department's parking control officer, completed her six-month probationary employment. The board approved her salary increase to $978.66 bi-weekly.

• Approved Brandon Schmitt's completion of his probationary period and elevation to firefighter. His salary increase is to $1,348.38 bi-weekly.
