Re: Command Sgt. Major's comments, Times-Union, April 22: "Most soldiers will tell you they had a great time in combat."
With all due respect - I served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. I shed blood, felt the icy fingers of fear grab me, but I never, ever had "a great time" in combat!
Our veterans group in Citrus County, Fla., have welcome home 30 warriors from Iraq and Afghanistan, 28 of them were involved in some of the bitterest fighting in those two places. Not one claimed to have had a "great time in combat."
There is a real difference between being "in combat" and "in a combat area."
If any readers of Times-Union are told by an individual who claims to "have a great time in combat" or, "I enjoy combat" or "I like war," or any other similar nonsense - do not first walk away - run - as fast as you can. That individual is dangerous!
