Concerns about asbestos at Warsaw Community Public Library apparently are groundless, according to library director Ann Zydek.
Some people have expressed concern that the public is being exposed to asbestos as construction work begins on the existing facility. Dust created by work at the old parking lot entrance, for example, was feared to contain asbestos since it comes from the old part of the building.
Zydek said the library was tested for asbestos in the mid '80s. "The (building) superintendent is very confident that workers are not in the area where there might be potential spots" containing asbestos, she said.
She said construction workers would not work on the project if there were a potential for asbestos contamination.
The library board will accept bids for asbestos removal at its Nov. 11 meeting. The board went through a similar process with the Masonic temple and its rental property before they were destroyed.
Zydek said work on the boiler room and other potentially affected areas will not begin until February; the bid process puts them ahead of schedule for removing asbestos from those areas, she said.
