Class 4A No. 5 Penn played the role of spoiler at the Tiger Den Tuesday evening. On a night Warsaw’s volleyball program honored Brynn Durecki, the team’s lone senior, Penn defeated the Lady Tigers 25-14, 25-9, 25-14. With the loss, Warsaw fell to 17-13 on the season, while the Lady Kingsmen improved to 26-2. The two teams will both play in next week’s Warsaw Sectional and could meet in the championship match. Penn opens tournament play with a 7 p.m. match against Elkhart Central. Warsaw will play Elkhart Memorial at 8 p.m. on Oct. 20, following the Goshen/Concord match. On Oct. 22, the winner of the Penn/Central match will play Northridge at 11 a.m., followed by the winners from the Oct. 20 contests. The sectional final will be played on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. En route to the win Tuesday, Penn’s Naomi Willis had 32 assists, while Rachel Hickey tallied 13 digs and three aces. Maria Schwindaman and Italia Fields had 10 and nine kills, respectively, while Jenn Heritz had seven kills. For the Lady Tigers, Erin Peugh led the team in digs with 18, while Durecki and Alexie Day produced 12 and nine, respectively. Day led Warsaw in kills with eight, and Kacy Bragg was tops in assists with 16. The Lady Tigers won the JV match 25-21, 22-25, 15-9 and improved to 22-3 on the season. Warsaw’s freshman squad was a 25-21, 25-22 winner over Penn and improved to 32-1 on the season. Warsaw’s varsity team concludes the regular season Saturday by hosting the Warsaw Spiker Invitational, while the JV squad participates in the Charger Invite at Elkhart Memorial.
