No. 4 Warriors Tame Squires

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊThe day the Wawasee golf team moved up to No. 4 in the state, the Warriors showed the Manchester Squires why. Wawasee traveled to Sycamore Golf Course in North Manchester Thursday and left with a 160-188 win.

Because a golf tournament was held at Sycamore earlier in the day, the greens on the course were especially fast.

"They triple cut the greens today," said Manchester coach Gary Goshert. "The greens were extremely fast. They were slick to chip to and fast to putt on. It was difficult for both teams."

Wawasee's Stephen Conrad was the top golfer of the meet, scoring and even-par 36. Conrad shot par on seven of the nine holes, he birdied the third hole and bogied hole three to finish the night even.

Warrior Lucas White recorded the next-best score of the match. He parred five holes and birdied one hole to finish the night with a 39.

"Lucas is hitting the ball better and shot a 39," said Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone. "Kyle (Lundy) made a nice comeback after double-bogeying No. 1 and quadruple-bogeying No. 2. He played the last seven holes in two-over."

Lundy finished the night with a 44, while teammate Justin Rider had a 41 and Joel Bickel shot a 45.

Manchester sophomore Lucas Zapf led the Squires. Zapf birdied hole No. 3 and parred holes No. 2, No. 4, No. 7 and No. 8 to finish the night with a 40.

"Joey Zapf shot a 40, and that is a very good golf score," said Goshert. "But our other scores were not good enough to be able to compete with most of the teams on our schedule, especially a team as good as Wawasee.

"We did not have our best meet tonight, but in perspective, we feel that if we continue to practice and focus, we will be in better game shape."

"Overall we did not play our best," said Coverstone. "It was not our best performance of the year, but we got the job done and got the win."

Although both coaches felt that their teams could have played better, Coverstone and Goshert were impressed with JV players.

Wawasee's Evan Gerard turned in a score of 40 to lead the JV squad.

"Evan Gerard played very well for the JV team," said Coverstone.

Manchester's David Huntington shot a 42 to lead the Squire JV squad.

"David Huntington did a really good job tonight," said Goshert. "He shot well and finished with a 42."

With the win, Wawasee improves to 2-1. Manchester falls to 2-5 on the season. Both teams will be in action again Saturday at the Wawasee Invitational at South Shore Golf Course.
