NORTH MANCHESTER - Located in the center of North Manchester, the public library is a treasure trove of books, movies, programs, information and staff members who enjoy assisting community members with their reading and information needs.North Manchester's first public library was founded in 1908 by the North Manchester Woman's Club, and its successors have served the community in several locations over the past century. During this centennial year, the library staff invites the community of North Manchester to help celebrate the library.
As a thank you to the community for 100 years of support and patronage, a committee of library-loving folks, led by David Rogers, has worked for the past year to create a calendar of festive programs to mark the library's centennial year.
The major events of the Centennial Celebration include a "Celebrate Your Library" bookmark contest for children and teens in February and March, a Community Read in March and April, a Centennial Festival in June, an ice cream giveaway during Fun Fest, and a November Centennial Reception. Also, from April through November, a rotation of library displays, with some technical assistance from the North Manchester Center for History, will highlight aspects of the library's history as well as events of the past century. A special library newsletter will be available in February with details of each of these events and other special programs.
The celebration is a community affair. The Community Read has been generously supported by a grant from the Community Foundation of Wabash County; Manchester Community Schools has graciously donated to the celebration; and two events, the Centennial Festival and Reception, have been underwritten by the Friends of North Manchester Public Library.
