GOSHEN - Northern Lakes Conference academic teams gathered Tuesday evening at Goshen High School for their annual Academic Super Bowl competition.
Seven of the eight conference schools were represented with the teams from NorthWood High School winning the overall competition.There are six separate competitions in the Super Bowl. These are science, mathematics, English, fine arts, social studies and interdisciplinary (questions from any of the previous five areas). Teams compete in groups of three and are given 20 seconds to answer a question. This year the competition centered on American History 1820-1877, the Civil War era.
In the science competition, the team from NorthWood (Nicole McFarland, Ashley Goorhouse, Steph Weaver, Jen Roose and Tabitha Bellman) placed first, followed by the team from Goshen High School and the team from Warsaw.
The team from Concord High School (Robyn Bortner and Matt Miller) placed first in the fine arts competition. NorthWood finished second and the team from Northridge finished third.
Competition in social studies followed and the team from Wawasee High School (Krista Bornman, Brandon Cox, Sarah Kimes, Cassady Palmer and Cody Paul) proved to be the best team. Second- and third-places were earned by the teams of Warsaw and NorthWood.
The next area of completion was mathematics. In this competition, the team from Northridge (Emily Friesen, Kyle Deak and Geoffrey Ong) proved victorious. In second place was the team from Concord, while the team from NorthWood placed third.
The final subject specific area of competition was in English. Here the students from NorthWood (Shaun Kronk, Amanda Korsmo, Patrick Thompson, Kerry Hoffer and Tori Miller) led the way. Concord followed in second and Warsaw placed third.
The interdisciplinary competition concluded the evening. NorthWood again led the way with a team consisting of Nicole McFarland, Shawn Kronk, Mang Zhang, Ann Lucas and Amanda Korsmo. Following the Panthers were Concord and Warsaw.
Following NorthWood in the team competition were Concord, Warsaw, Northridge, Goshen, Wawasee and Plymouth.
The next competition will be the state district competition in April with many of these schools heading to Northridge for that competition.
